The Transvaal Yacht Club hosted 12 entries for the Youth Interclub Keel boat Championship from 13 to 16 June 2015.
KZN – 2, Eastern Cape – 3, Northwest – 3, Freestate – 2, Gauteng – 1, Mpumalanga – 1.
ABYC was represented by Jordan van Zyl – Priory, Bronwyn van Wyngaardt – Collegiate Girls High School, Jenna Bailes – Collegiate Girls High School, Chad Bilsbury – Grey High School and Tamryn Bailes – Collegiate Junior School. Sigi and Tony Bailes provided coaching and chaperone.
Racing got underway on Saturday at 13h00, in very light fickle wind. Unfortunately 5 boats were late for the start (due to no wind…) of which ABYC was one of. Learnt a valuable lesson indeed, always motor the start, despite no wind.
The second race only started on Sunday in yet more light wind conditions. ABYC had a magnificent start, but lost some positions when the wind died to glassy conditions. Good mark rounding at the leeward mark resulted in them managing to pick up to 7th place. The last run down to the finish allowed ABYC to roll over another boat to obtain 6th position. Great sailing by the team!
The third race started in 3 knots which died down to zero-ish. Lovely conditions for brilliant photographs. Again, an awesome start saw ABYC leading the fleet most of the beat, only to lose it to the puff hunting skills of the Vaalies.
A complete shambles at the weather mark due to wind shifts unfortunately resulted in a number of penalties and 180’s as the boats could not lay the offset mark. The race was shortened to finish again on a run, with sagging spinnakers throughout the fleet.
The positions of the ABYC 11, 6 and 9. Currently 9th overall with 12 boats competing.
