Clearwater, FL (February 19, 2022) – Old age and treachery reasserted itself in the second and third days (February 18-19) of the 2022 505 North Americans, as 2021 Champs Mike Martin and Adam Lowry won yesterday’s only race, and went 3-2-1-1 today in the big breeze and waves, leaving them with a 5 point lead over Stu McNay and Caleb Paine with three races remaining.
Yesterday’s southerly proved peppier than forecast, allowing the first race to go off on (amended) schedule at 10:00am. A treacherous hole on the first run claimed several victims, including Howie Hamlin/ Jeff Nelson and McNay/ Paine, leaving them to languish while boats on course right flew downwind in 10-12 knots.
Martin/ Lowry took the win with Mike Holt/ Rob Woelfel and Craig Thompson/ JB Turney close behind. Unfortunately, a gigantic fog bank rolled in as the race finished, leaving the RC with breeze but no visibility, ending racing for the day.
Today started off with breeze and clouds but the clouds moved out to deliver champagne conditions. Four races in 15+ knots and big waves tested endurance as well as speed and tactics. Holt and Woelfel started off hot with a 1-1, only to have Martin and Lowry answer right back with a 1-1 of their own. McNay and Paine had what would be a dream day for many. 2-4-3-4, but with Martin and Lowry’s lights out sailing they dropped into second, with Holt and Woelfel posting a 1-1-5-2 today sets them one point behind McNay and Paine for the overall.
With three races and an offshore breeze scheduled for tomorrow, places are subject to change up and down the scoreboard.
Twelve races are planned on February 17-20.
