RYC opens their Sailing Season

28 August 2016

RYC Opening 20160826
Redhouse Yacht Club openend their 2016/17 Sailing Season on Saturday 26 August 2016. Here the Class 1 fleet charges towards RYC.

Clubs across the Southern hemisphere are ‘opening’ their 2016/17 Sailing Seasons as Spring approaches.

Port Elizabeth based sailing club, Redhouse Yacht Club, was the first to open their season in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday 26 August with two races and a sailpast in idyllic conditions for sailing on the river – a steady 10 knot breeze saw club members and supporters from local yacht clubs enjoy the sailing and salute of Club Commodore Andrew Martin.

In Class 1 the tussle was between husband and wife sailors – Tony and Sigi Bailes who took line honours respectively in races one and two with Sigi on the Laser and Tony sailing a Finn Dinghy.

The East wind made for great reaching down the Swartkops River past the Redhouse Yacht Club and a good start to the sailing season which is jam packed with events.

The next opening of the season sail past is when the Algoa Bay Yacht Club open their season on Saturday 3 September after their Frostbite Series begins.

On 17 September 2016 RYC and ABYC will combine to sail the annual Barts Bash – an event sailed by clubs worldwide in memory of America’s Cup sailor, Bart Simpson.

Persons wishing to experience sailing will be welcome on Wednesday evening 28 September when ABYC hosts it’s first ‘Bring a Newbie’ Wednesday evening sail.
