Shipwrecked Mariners (Trophy) at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

Easter Monday saw the club racing for the Shipwrecked Mariners Trophy, with weather which suggested that there was every chance of some of the fleet capsizing, but hopefully not becoming shipwrecked!
The morning dawned cold and very wet, with heavy rain which had begun the night before persisting throughout the racing. If the sailors didn’t get wet from the sea, they certainly did from above!
Race Officer Andy Turner set a course which saw the fleet head back into the creek for the windward mark, providing a short beat before a longer run out to the lagoon. There were thrills and spills along the course, with plenty of planing to keep sailors on their toes.
The bad weather may have reduced the fleet somewhat from the races over the preceding days of the Easter weekend, but a fleet of ten boats enjoyed the race. Peter Turner, making a welcome return to sailing after injury, took first place in his OK with Malcolm Morley (Europe) second and Rodney Tidd (OK) in third.
Alex Smith and Paul Beachall (Sharpie) were the first double handed boat and Anna Morley was first Junior.
The next events for the club are the Seafarers’ Pennant and Deep Sea Fishermen’s Pennant races on 22 and 23 April, with The Jubilee Trust Pennant and Elizabeth Mowbray Trophy races on 6 and 7 May and the club looks forward to hosting an Open Meeting for 12m2 Sharpies and Europe dinghies on 20 and 21 May.
