The ABYC Exco recently received a proposal from Point Yacht Club in Durban, who are responsible for organising the 2015, 2016 1nd 2017 Vasco Da Gama Ocean Race, enquiring if ABYC would be willing to host the finish of this classic ocean race in Algoa Bay. We can confirm that the Exco have replied positively and enthusiastically to the proposal by PYC..
The Vasco de Gama Ocean Race has been run between Maputo and Durban for the past 40+ years. For a number of reasons the decision has been made to explore the possibility of racing South, starting in 2015. The date of the first event will be in late April/May when all the public holidays occur.
We feel that this is an excellent event that will help to raise the profile of South African Ocean Racing and will be honoured to host the finish.
ABYC’s involvement will be:
- Provide a suitable finish line that is manned 24 hours over the finishing period. Our initial thought is the end of the Shark Rock Pier, where it will not clash with shipping movement. It is the focal point of the beach front and ideal to publicize the finish besides having a lot of spectator parking and viewing space.
- Provide safe and convenient moorings for between 10 and twenty boats. They range from 42 footers downwards so we can accommodate them on our Marina.
- Organise and hold a prize giving and reception evening to mark the end of the event.
- If need be organise accommodation for crew and family whilst in PE.
We feel that this event will be a great boost for the Port, the Club and Port Elizabeth.
