Christmas Wishes

As we close 2013 I wish all our members and friends a relaxed holiday and a blessed Christmas to those who celebrate it. May 2014 be a good and progressive year for you and for our Club.

I thank all who have contributed to our Club over the past year in participation and service to keeping it running. Particularly to our Staff who have served the Club and its members though the year. And especially at this time of the year when we we are all relaxing with family and friends and they are on duty contributing to our enjoyment. My personal gratitude and good wishes.

Ammended ISAF Offshore Special Regulations 2014-15 Published

The 2014-15 ISAF Offshore Special Regulations have been published on the ISAF website with an amendment sheet outlining changes in the new edition.

The ISAF Offshore Special Regulations (www.sailing.org/specialregs) are used by race organisers to provide uniform minimum equipment, accommodation and training standards for monohull and multihull yachts racing offshore.

A number of changes made at the ISAF Annual Conference affect the new 2014-15 edition of the regulations. Unless otherwise specified the amendments are effective on 1 January 2014. An amendment sheet containing all the changes can be viewed here. It should be noted that national prescriptions may take priority over the ISAF text and you should check with your relevant authority.

A brief summary of significant changes:

3.04 Stability Monohulls
Specific monohull stability requirements for Categories 0-3 replace previous recommendations to Race Organisers.

3.14. Pulpits, Stanchions, Lifelines
13.4.2 – the tension of lifelines has been amended from a guideline to a requirement, with specified maximum deflections for top and mid-lifelines (guardrails).
3.14.6 – dyneema lifeline diameter and materials, have been amended to increase the minimum diameter and to permit double-braided construction.
3.14.7 – Pulpits and Stanchions may now be constructed of carbon fibre.

3.29 – Communications Equipment – Radar, AIS
3.29.1 b) v) VHF radio transceivers installed after 31 December 2015 shall be DSC capable. (Digital Selective Calling).(Category 0-3)
vi) – DSC capable VHF transceivers shall be programmed with an Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) (unique to the boat), be connected to a GPS receiver and be capable of making distress alert calls as well as sending and receiving a DSC position report with another DSC equipped station.
3.29.1 l) has been amended to permit Broadband Radar units.
3.29.1 p) AIS antennas are required to mounted on the top of the mainmast (category 0-2)

4.10 Radar Reflectors
The existing requirements have been amended to: “An octohederal passive radar reflector shall be carried with circular sector plates of minimum diameter 30cm(12”) or a reflector with a documented minimum Radar Cross Section (RCS) area of 2m2 . ”

4.20.3 Liferafts
v) has been amended to require liferaft stowage that can allow ready launching of the liferaft in the case of an inverted monohull with moveable ballast.

4.22.1 Lifebuoys
(a) has been amended so that a Lifesling is not an optional alternative to a lifebuoy.

4.24 Heaving Line – Lifesling
New (c) requires a Lifesling in categories 0-3.

4.28.2 Man Overboard Alarm
The existing requirement is modified to require that a man overboard position can be recorded within 10 seconds and the position monitored. Categories 0-2.

Boat of the Year: Xp 44 (X-Yachts, Haderslev, Denmark)

Just shy of 44 feet overall—with a maximum beam slightly over 13 feet and light displacement of 19,000 pounds—it feels like a substantial boat. In a weight-saving change to its building technique, X-Yachts now uses a composite grid structure in the hull instead of a stainless-steel grid as they did in the past. Belowdeck, the boat is open, bright, and airy, and designed such that the ends of the boat are relatively empty and light. The boat has a traditional three-cabin layout—forepeak and two aft with pipe cots if need be—and convertible amidships settees. The starboard nav station is on tracks and can be shifted fore or aft depending on its intended use. The salon table can also be easily removed for racing.

Best One-Design: J/88 (J Boats and CCF Composites, Bristol, R.I.)

At roughly 5,000 pounds, the J/88 has a deck-stepped rig and a single-point lift so it can be hauled with a hoist and parked in the driveway or trailered for the occasional class championship.

Best Recreational Racer: Catalina 275 Sport (Catalina Yachts, Largo, Fla.)

The boat has accommodations to comfortably overnight or weekend, with a settee table up in the bow that drops to convert to a double berth. A galley to starboard with a drawer that fits a big cooler and an enclosed head to port bring it one level beyond roughing it. A cavernous starboard aft berth was designed to fit a stand-up paddleboard. The marquee feature is the cockpit’s long bench seats, which are all about maximum-capacity harbor cruises and casual weeknight PHRF races. The standard rig package is an aluminum mast with a self-tacking jib. The retractable asymmetric spinnaker pole, which is bolted on the foredeck through Delrin collars, is optional but highly recommended.

Best Dinghy: RS Cat 16 (RS Sailing, Brockley, United Kingdom)

At 300 pounds, it’s not the lightest beach cat, but RS wanted strength and longevity over weight, given the abuse beach cats get. The aluminum alloy rudders kick up, and there are no daggerboards to destroy during beach or dock landings. Long hull skegs are deep enough to minimize leeway.

RS aims for simplicity in every system, and that’s true with the CAT16; the mast easily pins to a ball on the forward beam, every halyard runs externally, and there’s minimal hardware. Trampoline pockets hide unused sheets and halyards, and there are proper safety elements, too, including a righting line and flotation in the mast.

Best Crossover: Dehler 38 (Dehler by Hanse Yachts, Greifswald, Germany)

The Judel/Vrolijk team is responsible for the Dehler 38’s slippery shape, and while it’s modern and fast below the waterline, its beam gives substantial volume to the boat, which allows for standing headroom and a three-cabin layout. A few space-saving ideas help, including a nav-station desk that slides fore and aft, and a cabin door to the port side head that can be closed two ways. One way creates an enclosed head and the other creates an aft master stateroom.

Best Innovation: Tiwal 3.2 (Vannes, France)

The TIWAL 3.2 is the very first high performance inflatable sailing dinghy for water sports; it is designed to make navigation fun and simple and for the thrill of speed and glide. It’s versatile design allows for both high performance solo use and leisure sailing in pairs. TIWAL 3.2 is 3,20m long and has a 5,40m2 sail. It is light (less than 50kg), compact and folds away in two bags. It can be assembled and taken down in 20 minutes.

2nd Gypsy Africa’s and Interclub, River Championships 2014

Redhouse Yacht Club invites you all once again to dig out those Gypsy’s you have in the garden etc, dust them off, fix them up and join them for the 2nd Gypsy Africa’s, (last years was a great success but we know there are more Gypsy’s out there waiting to get back on the water) held in conjunction with their Interclub & River Championships 2014 Regatta.

Gypsey Sailing
The 2nd Gypsey Africa’s takes place from 25 to 26 January 2013 at Redhouse.

  • Where: Swartkops River at Redhouse outside Port Elizabeth.
  • When: 25 & 26 January 2014.
  • Who: Open to all dinghy classes.
  • Time: First race on Saturday 25 January not before 11-00.
  • Accomodation: Camping is available at the yacht club @ R25-00 per person from 12h00 Friday 24 January to end of regatta. There are B&B’s in Redhouse at special regatta rates.
  • Refreshments: Light meals & refreshments will be available to purchase for the duration of the regatta. Braai fires & salads will be provided on Saturday night.
  • Cost: Senior Single-handed per boat: R100-00, Senior Double-handed per boat: R150-00, Junior Single-handed per boat: R70-00 (under 18 years), Junior Double-handed per boat: R90-00 (under 18 years )

Join us to commemorate the memory of Nelson Mandela

The Minister of Sport & Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, recently announced; “In honouring the mourning period of Madiba, all our sports competitions that have been scheduled for 15 December will be cancelled to honour and mourn the death of Tata. Teams will also wear the black band and sing the national anthem and dedicate coming games in honour of Mandela.”

Accordingly there will be no competitive sailing at the Algoa Bay Yacht club on Sunday 15 December 2013.

In recognition of the late former President, the Chartroom Restaurant at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club will also be closed on Sunday.

The club will be open to members and their guests who wish to gather in fellowship to watch on the big screen the funeral proceedings in Qunu that will take place from from 9:00 am to 12:00 midday. Members and guests will be able to continue sharing their remembrances after the proceedings at a traditional braai. Braai packs will be supplied or you are welcome to bring your own.

Please note that most shops will also be closed on this day.

ABYC Commodore, Sean Wiseman, said; “We view Sunday as an appropriate day to gather as a club to commemorate the late Nelson Mandela. Madiba viewed sport as a medium which has the power to inspire and unite people. The life and name of this great man touched our club and Nelson Mandela Bay in many positive ways. Our annual prestige sailing regatta is tangible proof of the legend of Nelson Mandela as in 2004 we saw the biggest fleet ever to sail offshore in Port Elizabeth with a total of 98 boats sailing in the Nelson Mandela Bay Isuzu week which was sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole and GMSA.”

The club and restaurant will be open on Monday the Day of Reconciliation and a musician will play music on the deck. A percentage of takings from both Sunday and Monday will be donated to an appropriate children’s charity and ABYC extend an invite to clubs and restaurants to do the same in honour of the late Dr Nelson Rolihlala Mandela.

Sunday is an ideal day to spend at YOUR club in fellowship with other members without the general public there – who knows, you may even like it! 🙂
