First Races in Centenary Cup Series

Four races in the Centenary Cup series were sailed inside the Port of Port Elizabeth on Saturday 3 November 2012, in South East Winds of 25 – 35 knots.

A poor entry of 3 boats with the main competitor Wattoo withdrawing prior to the 1st race due to a crewman being injured, leaving the 2 Stad 34’s in near match racing format gunning each other. Adamo with its “want-a-be” hot-shot crew pulled off a 4 nil lead on the series over rival Struan with their “laid-back wet behind the ears” crew with Rod van der Weele (80 + in the shade) at the helm (last time he sailed was 2 years ago).

A big thanks to Ronnie Baer and the Ocean Mania crew for Race Officer duty and laying of course.

Racing on Sunday 04/11/12 was cancelled due to no wind as well as no crew for Ocean Mania.

Having fun and revelling in the big winds and flat water conditions was young Thomas Ochabski who ripped up the water sailing his Laser inside the Port until his boom went boom, and he limped safely back to the Club slip-way.

The series continues on the 17 & 18 November with the 17th incorporating the Salty Cracks Race for our important senior club members.

Hopefully the series will end with a bigger fleet and a more aggressive challenge for the front.

Crewman injured at start of Centenary Cup

Charlie Hill received a severe blow to the head whilst crewing on Wattoo.

The crew where preparing the sails and a reef had been set, the skipper called for a “jibe” and all took up positions. Charlie avoided the boom but the main-sheet slammed into his side, knocking him over where he struck his head on the stanchion and toe-rail knocking him out.

Fortunately the incident happened inside of the harbour and with the assistance of NSRI and GuardMed Charlie was stabilized and taken to St Georges, received 8 stitches and later discharged.

On the same afternoon Thomas Ochabski sailing his Laser snapped his boom when winds picked-up with gusts recorded over 32 Knots. Thomas managed to safely return to the slip-way.

Notice of Race – Centenary Cup

Races 1, 2 and 3 of the Centenary Cup Series will be sailed on:

  • Saturday 3 November 2012 – Skippers briefing at 13h00
  • Sunday 4 November 2012 – Skippers briefing at 09h30

Depending on wind & sea state a “PROPER” course will be laid.

Gauntlets’ have been thrown down, poaching of crew is rife, much bantering has been heard, friendships will be forsaken when on the water but only to be strengthened when back on terra firma. The Centenary Cup Series will re-awaken your love for sailing, as well as sharpen your sailing skills, the series will be closely contested, a poor knot or wrong tactic will be costly, no quarter will be given.
