The Facebook group exists to share information on the travels of Sailing Club Brass Bells that have been ‘liberated’ by competitive sailors who have sailed at or to the club (target) that loses it’s bell. Long may the fun go on. The rules are simple – if you ‘liberate’ a bell it’s journeys MUST be posted here and it MUST return to it’s club in a better condition than it left in. The ONLY way in which you can reclaim your bell is to send a sailing team to take part in the home waters of the club that has liberated your bell.

Welcome to a sweet little bell

A box arrived at ABYC earlier this month and I, thinking that it was the return of our beloved ABYC Brass Bell, didn’t bother to open the box – waiting rather for the promised arrival of our bells new backing plate, brass plaque and other goodies after MSC Week.

Anyway those goodies failed to pitch this past Sunday Morning so last night I decided to take ‘our Brass Bell’ out of the box and have a stern chat to him – only to realise that the brass bell in the box was poor old Hermion from TYC. Much embarrassed at our apparent lack of comradeship I immediately served Hermion with a cold refreshing libation and read the note enclosed.

Dear ABYC Commodore

I find myself in the beautiful Algoa Bay and have finally found Algoa Bay Yacht Club after a long journey from Transvaal Yacht Club.

Alas, I am getting lonely, my ABYC Brass Bell mate has been kidnapped! I was so looking forward to being reunited with the ABYC Brass Bell.

Rumour has it that the ABYCV Brass Bell will be returning in the near future by a squadron of brave ABYC sailors. They will endure high seas and severe weather conditions in order to rescue and reclaim it.

I sincerely hope that the same will be done for me by my TYC Sailors!

Until such time, please can I drop anchor here to enjoy some wind, sun & saltwater? (Hope I do not rust…)

The ABYC Bikers have promised to take Hermion out for a spot of fresh air and a trip to the Baviaans, and the bar staff have demonstrated their great strength and fitness by doing push ups in preparation of defending Hermion’s honour!

Hermion tells me that she has a special ring prepared for any TYC Sailor that takes part in a sailing regatta in Algoa Bay and, if asked nicely, will return to TYC after her great adventure alongside the ‘dam that goes on forever’.
