A REMINDER TO MEMBERS ON MEMBERSHIP FEES:

Membership fees are now overdue. To members who have paid your fees, a big thank you. To all those who have not yet paid, please do so. It is the right thing to do. Any member who has a problem with their account, can contact Rodney Idris or Joan Barry.

9. SUBSCRIPTIONS AND ACCOUNTS:

9.3. All accounts must be paid in full within 30 days of statement.

9.4 Accounts not paid after 45 days from date of statement will be considered in arrears, at which time credit privileges will automatically be withdrawn and the member will not be in good standing.

9.6. Members whose accounts are not paid 90 days after the date on which the debit was incurred may have their names removed from the Register of Members at the discretion of the Executive Committee.

9.2.3 In cases of financial hardship, the member can contact the EXCO.

10. RESIGNATION:

The resignation of a member shall be notified in writing to the Secretary and any member resigning shall be liable for his/her subscription in respect of the year during which his/her letter of resignation is received by the Secretary.

(The year runs from 01 June to 31 May)

Dieter Wasserman

Thank you all who assisted with Dieter’s heart attack at the club on Saturday 28 September. Darryl Garner and Sean Wiseman assited with CPR until the NSRI crew arrived to take over. A number of other members also assisted during the situation and Heydren has expressed her appreciation for all the phone calls and the help that was given. There will not be a funeral or wake as this is private. At a later date NSRI will take the ashes out to sea and we will then inform the members. Members can then join NSRI with their yachts if they wish.

Sailpast

It must surely have been an envious sight if one was amongst the many spectators lining the end of Hobie Pier. From Optimist to 38″, it was truly a great sight, 10 dinghies 16 keel boats, all sailing together. In acknowledging the salute, the culmination of the boats was fantastic with sufficient water between. Taking the salute was ABYC Club President Chris Grylls, Commodore Alan Straton (new Club blazer), Redhouse Yacht Club Commodore Andrew Martin and Councillor Marion Harning as Special guests.

Water-fights were aplenty with many coming well prepared branding high-calibre water guns. Wildthing were ruthless terrorising the wee chaps and the big.

After taking-in more than sufficient “energy” drinks Chinook hoisted a spinnaker given that the wind was blistery 5 knots (which would have been testing). Making a rare appearance was Adamo by announcing their readiness for a competitive sailing season. Not going unnoticed was Terry Phipps at 88 years old helming Fling still showing the other misfits onboard how to sail.

Once back in moorings and all accounted for, braai’s where going, Bitter End serving ones favourite refreshments, live music permeating from the deck, members and friends rounded the day off in jollie ABYC fashion – enjoying each other’s company.

• Saturday 31st October: It’s Halloween time again and the house committee are planning a Halloween function. It is a fun event and everyone can dress up in costumes if they so desire. There will be live music and food available. More info will be available closer to the time, make a note in your calendars to be part of this fun evening.

Sailing

• Sunday 21st September: The 1st sailing event Pursuit 1. This race will also be ABYC participation in the world wide event the Bart Challenge. The Pursuit races are great way to “loosen up” the winches, soften the sheets and halyards and refresh the crew of their positions. The 7 day forecast is for a moderate to fresh eastly. Watch this space and keep watch on the notice boards for sailing times.

The Port Authority has expressed concern at the amount of ‘stuff’ lying around on the hardstanding and surrounds – citing health and occupational hazards as a concern.

Couple that with the upcoming site inspection of ABYC by the sponsors of the 2015 505 World

Championships in early October, we are requesting owners of this ‘stuff’ to please remove all that belongs to them as soon as possible.

We will be removing and dumping the remains of the ‘stuff’ not claimed by the end of the third week of September.

Prize Giving

This year’s prize giving saw the junior sailors been recognised for their sailing achievements. Malgas swept the table taking bulk of the silver-ware, and deservedly so. The combination of Tony and Ziggy’s sailing skills and competitiveness plus a relatively “new crew” to sailing, gave them the continued edge over other boats. Until another boat of the same calibre enters the fray there may be no stopping them, only time will tell!!!!

Dinner & Dance

This year’s event was put together with a small budget and a very big heart and effort by the organising committee of Hilary and Lee with their group of assistants. The food was fantastic and the DJ played the right tunes according to the mood of the evening. Having the youngster’s as part of the celebrations put a different dimension to the evening, and they were full of energy on the dance floor. The older members were not shy to show the up-starts the correct moves. All-in-all a successful event with a good turn-out, and a most enjoyable evening.

Sailing

• Sailpast: 10 boats lead by Struan headed out into the Bay and sailed past the stern of Majestic (PEDSAC) parked off Hobie Pier, where ABYC Commodore and President took the salute to officially close the 2013/14 sailing season. The sailing school cadets where all on-board Martinique armed with water pistols and bombs, the other yachts fearing war gave plenty of sea-way. Valiant and Struan bared full sailing colours. All boats had a good sail in a moderate SW and remarkably very flat seas.
• Vasco Da Gama 2014: This year’s Vasco sailed from Maputo to Durban was met with mixed wind and sea conditions. Apart from the remnants of the big SW that we had late last week which gave the fleet an hour of “testing” on Friday evening, the fleet was subjected to light to no winds and serious tactical sailing became the order. This year’s race had ABYC sailor Ziggy Bailes onboard a Beneteau 40 – Ray of Light (visit RNYC web site click Face-Book). Ray of Light took line honours 20h11’54”, unfortunately they had to settle for 3rd place on corrected time. The 2015 Vasco Da Gama will be sailed from Durban to Port Elizabeth.

The annual Dinner Dance and Prize Giving was a great event worthy of a club of this standing. My only grouse would be that more members were not up and dancing! Well done to all the team that put it together, they did a fantastic job. I especially liked Harry’s rope work! I only hope we have a similarly “formal” event next year.

Once again well done to everyone who put the effort in for this.

SA’s Hudson and Jim claim breakthrough win in Holland

24 May 2014, Johannesburg – South African sailors Roger Hudson and Asenathi Jim took a massive stride towards achieving their Olympic goal by winning their first ever major international event at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Holland on Saturday.

Going into the final medal race in fourth position, the duo managed to negotiate their way through the fleet to finish second and take the overall gold ahead of Britain’s Olympic silver medallist Luke Patience and teammate Elliot Willis.

The win in Medemblik marks the first major win for Jim and Hudson as a team, exactly three years after they raced there in their first regatta together in the 470 class.

“We knew we had to perform and it seems that under pressure we seem to do really well. We had that pressure on us and we both love it,” said a thrilled Jim afterwards.

“It’s a big breakthrough for us and it’s great,” added Hudson. “It’s come at a really good time to motivate us and to keep us rolling with our project, which is obviously a four-year project going towards Rio [Olympic Games in 2016].

“It’s wonderful to make this breakthrough together. We’re having a good few regattas in a row and we have a soft spot for this one, as this is where we began our campaign three years ago so we’re very happy to have had a victory here.

“It’s also a nice moment to briefly reflect on what we’ve managed to achieve so far. Of course very soon after a short celebration it’ll be back to business. We’ve got two years to go to Rio and we have to keep making further breakthroughs to get to where we want to there.”

Having been on the road for two months, Hudson and Jim will now return home to Cape Town for three weeks before continuing their campaign in Europe.

Lloyd Edwards spent a month in Patagonia during January 2014. He says; “After arriving in Buenos Aires we did a 20 hour bus trip to Peninsular Valdez which is where the killer whales beach themselves to catch baby seals. We picked up a colleague’s vehicle and headed down the East coast of Patagonia. Some people describe this part of the world as a refrigerated wind tunnel!

Every few hundred kilometres or so we would hit some little sleepy coastal town and cruised out to see to see an awesome selection of marine animals on their breeding colonies. At the Southernmost point of the mainland we crossed the Straights of Magellan into Chile. This is the island of “Tierra del Fuego” or “Land of Fire” which is what the early seafarers saw from their ships. From here we travelled on to Ushuaia, the Southern most city on the planet at 55 degrees. This is the gateway to the Beagle Channel and from where the cruise ships leave for Antarctica.

We then retraced our steps and headed west to the famous Perito Moreno glacier which inches itself forward at two metres per day. From here we visited the trekking capital of the world at El Chalten and gazed in awe at the famous Mt Fitzroy. Fitzroy was captain of Darwin’s ship the “Beagle”. From here on it was North along the infamous RN 40 route. If you think our gravel roads are bad, think again!”

Sailing News

The start of the Noordhoek Race saw 4 boats jockeying the start line off Hobie Pier. With light north wind the fleet had spinnakers up early and maintained the bags to the turning mark off Noordhoek Ski-boat Club (again thanks to there assistance). A pleasant beat back to Cape Receife for the homeward stretch, the fleet where becalmed for a considerable time before the wind coming in from the east started to fill in. Again the spinnakers made for a glorious run to the finish at Hobie Pier where a large raucous crowd cheer the boats across the line in a very close finish.
