Bornman N says: “Having thrown down the gauntlet and challenged Spirit of Gaurdial (Spelling sorry Derek), we rigged up and prepared. The verbal sparing and mutual threats of dishing out a solid walloping have been thrown about for months. With war formally declared we mounted up and headed to sea.
I had the privileged of having the esteemed S Wiseman on board. He was on time. Although in shock I took this as a positive sign.
On the pointy stick that tells you where to go was Jan Bornman an old sprog sailor. I was coffee boy and reserve orange peeler. We also picked up a hitch-hiker who’s name defies my poor Afrikaans spelling abilities. He was a handy coffee grinder. The wind was 8.5 to 12 knots. With the wind on the bow, we left port on a Starboard beat. Opting to head out to sea we enjoyed fairly steady breeze. Spirit of G with Derek and minions on board headed for the beach. (I think they stopped for KFC)
We rounded the Bell-buoy at 19:30. Spirit of G having turned back due to apparent descent amongst the crew, something about being fed at a reasonable hour…..
At this point I held a vote and it was decided by me, myself and I that we had won. Sweet Victory in hand we headed back to port.
The wind having completed her task went on supper break. A motor sail saw us back at the harbour and after a brief traffic delay we returned to mooring safe and sound.”

We tend to forget just how effective we are as a club and how enormous our contribution by a small band of unpaid volunteers has been to the sport of sailing, our city and our country – BE PROUD, Be VERY proud.
Just two short paragraphs – one from the 5O5 Championships and one from a recent letter to ABYC.
Holt paid tribute to the hard-working volunteers who put on such a great show at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club. While one day was cancelled due to 45-knot winds, the other five days produced some of the best sailing conditions that the international 505 fleet has ever experienced. “I can’t speak highly enough of the sailing we’ve had here,” said Holt. “I wish more sailors had travelled to Port Elizabeth to experience it for themselves.”
(Hosting sailing regatta’s in) Port Elizabeth is desirable from a business perspective but importantly (ABYC) has the reputation as an excellent host for national and international sailing regattas. The recently held SAP 505 World Championships by Algoa Bay Yacht Club has further boosted Port Elizabeth’s standing as a world-class sailing destination.
As a club we need to be actively pitching to host HUGE international events as by doing so we will not only further enhance Port Elizabeth’s reputation as a global sailing destination but will also assist in promoting its marine industry capabilities, tourism and well being of all.
