Nick from GMR Marketing (SAP 505 Team) arrived at ABYC on 23/03/2015 and has the following to say about the Algoa Bay Yacht Club, Port Elizabeth:

The committee and members of ABYC welcomed us with open arms whilst we activated SAP’s sponsorship at the 505 World Championships. Everyone was so helpful and we were incredibly impressed by the can-do attitude. We had a fantastic time and the event was a great success.

5O5 International Jury get wheels

Local Uitenhage based automotive manufacturer, Volkswagen, sponosored the use of a Caravelle by the international jury for the 23 March to 3 April 2015 World Champs.

I got to drive out to VWSA early on Friday morning, 20 March to fetch the vehicle.

This time-lapse shows the journey back from the VWSA Technical Centre to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club – proud hosts of this prestigious event.

505 SAP World Champs Sailors Lounge floor Time Lapse

Workmen work on the construction of the floor of the Sailors Lounge for the 60th SAP 5o5 World Championships sailed in Port Elizabeth from 23 March to 3 April 2015.

The 60th SAP 505 Worlds Regatta is preceded by a pre-worlds regatta comprising of six races over three days, with a minimum of three races to make a regatta. This will also serve as the 2015 South African National Championships.

The 2015 505 World Championships will comprise nine scheduled races held over seven days. There will be no more than two races scheduled per day. Three races are required to constitute a championship series. Only one race will be sailed on the final day unless at the start of the final day’s racing only one race has been completed.

The racing program will allow for three days of racing followed by a rest day and then three further days of racing. Two races will be scheduled for the first day, and one race for the second race day. Further race days will alternate between two races and one race each alternate day.

Work continued apace at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club as organisers, the Port of Port Elizabeth and the City readied themselves for international guests and the focus of the sailing world turned to Nelson Mandela Bay.

You may not recognise the club when you next visit

Ongoing maintenance and repair work as well as installation of new works (from sponsorship money) continue apace at ABYC.

The electrical box on the hard has been repaired by Zurchers Electrical and has a lock on it. You will have to use a specific plug type in order to draw electricity – these are available in the bar or from the office at a cost of R70.00 each.

Work continues on the fence behind the club (next to Shop 17) – this will form the boat park for the 60th SAP 505 World Championships from 23 March to 3 April 2015. The roadway area from the club entrance to the Stop Street at Eyethu will be closed off just before, during and after the World Championships for the erection of a marquee (SAP Sailors Lounge) and building of a wooden deck.

Please be advised that we start today with the work to the front façade – this will include painting, steel frames and window installation.

There are 3 contractors involved:

William Scott for painting
Twisted Steel for the window steel supports
Alusash for the aluminium windows.

Scope of work involved:

William Scott will start Tuesday 24 February, they will remove the 2 coke umbrellas on the front lawn for access. Their job is to repair and paint the front gable structures and they will be on site until 9 March.

They will use a `cherry picker’ for access. Frank Atkinson has moved the balustrade back already, to move patrons back.

As members of the club please be aware of the safety issues surrounding this work and assistance with safety is going to be an ongoing effort by all!

Twisted Steel will install the steel structure to form the frame for the windows and will be on site from Thursday 26 February to 4 March.

The Aluminium window contractor will be on site from the 4 to 13 March.

Please do take note that ABYC will be extremely safety conscious from 24 February until 13 March and we ask that members please be aware of the ongoing work and bring guests and visitors attention to safety and works procedure as well.

The tables on the deck, of necessity, must be far from the work site at all times.

From 6 March a team of people from the SAP marketing arm will descend on the club and begin with work to remove the vibracrete wall and erect the marquee and wooden deck – please try not to be too friendly and entertain them as they have a job to do in a limited time span.
