Welcome to edition 11/2013 of the Halyard
We seem to be coming to an exciting time of the year in the sailing calendar. With Hobie Week this week, the Bell Buoy Challenge at the end of the month and Algoa Bay Week at the end of April there are plenty of excuses why you have to get out on the water. Whether racing is your thing or just a day sail out into the bay, there is something for everyone!
Reminders and Special Notices
- Fire at Whitey’s house: There was a fire at Whitey’s house last night (Sunday). He has lost everything, including wallet and ID. Any donations are much needed. Clothing size XL and shoe size 10. Financial contributions can be paid into the membership subs account: Bank: Nedbank, Branch: 12151700, Account number: 126 3074 731, Reference: Whitey.
- Club Fees: Reminder to all members who have not yet paid their club fees. Please contact Rodney Idris or Joan Barry to make arrangements for payment.
- Ore Terminal: On the counter inside the Club House foyer is a folder for members/boats owners to record their grievance(s) regarding Ore Dust Fallout. Please do not write or record anything other than actual grievances that can be substantiated and avoid general comments and other unnecessary garbage. It has taken ABYC some time to develop a cordial relationship with the Port stake holders. The Health & Safety Officers will collect the forms on a weekly basis, and hopefully act on the responses. So please do write when you have a genuine grievance.
COF Requirements: COF Boats requiring their annual COF survey must follow the below steps;
- First complete the “Survey” form (ABYC COF Checklist), select which Safety Category you require, sign the form once complete.
- Pay the appropriate fee for survey to SAS, (have proof of payment)
- Ensure your vessel is up to the standard required to obtain a COF, pyrotechnics in date, vessels name on MOB Buoy, first aid kit complete etc and the vessel structurally sound.
- Contact an ABYC Safety Officer for an appointment. Present to Safety Officer the following: Your signed survey; SAS receipt; SAS membership card.
- Accompany the Safety Officer to your fine vessel for survey. Thence to ABYC Club house and buy him a beer. (not that the buying of beer affects the outcome of the survey!)

- Monday 18th March: The four-part series of 45 minute DVDs on the history of the Royal Navy continues in the bar on Monday Evenings. March 18th– Up to end World War 1. March 25th- To the modern Navy. At 17H45 each Monday evening. No charges just come and have a beer (or Rum)
- Sunday 24th March: Eric will be singing on the deck
Sailing News
- 21st March 2013: HOBIE WEEK kicks-off on the 21 March with the 1st race starting near lunch time. PEBYC will be open. At least 4 teams representing ABYC will be participating, so get down to HobieBeach and Shark Rock Pier and show your support.
- 27th March 2013: IN-PORT CHALLENGE 6 will be sailed on Wednesday the 27 March weather dependant. More information closer to the date.
- 30th March 2013: The BELL BUOY SWIM CHALLENGE is on Saturday 30th March. Once again ABYC has been called upon to render assistance for yachts to line the swim route. Please advise John Tudehope if you are able to assist. (Another excuse to get out on the water – Ed!)
- 27th April 2013: ALGOA BAY WEEK – By now many would have received an email with a very short fun DVD enticing you to get your entries into the Club asap. Algoa Bay Week is from 27th April to 1st May 2013. Entries forms are now available at ABYC Bar, ABYC Web and coming to your email. This year the 505 Nationals will be incorporated into Algoa Bay Week.
- Warrior: The good ship Warrior will be returning to her mooring in the coming days. It seems that she has over-stayed her welcome down in the Cape, participating in several regattas with success (and ruthlessness).
