NOR – Race of the Cardinals

The Race of the Cardinals will be sailed at Algoa Bay Yacht Club on 22nd October 2017:

NOTICE OF RACE

1. RULES

The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2017 – 2020.

The Organising Authority is the ABYC, under the auspices of South African Sailing.

1.1 The Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS) 2017 – 2020, the Class Rules of the participating classes, the Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions will apply.

ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

2.1 In accordance with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Regulation 19 (Eligibility Code), all competitors (Helmspersons and all other crew) shall be members in good standing of a Yacht Club affiliated to and in good standing with South African Sailing or their Member National Authority in the case of non-South Africans. The Yacht Club name and membership details shall be stated on the entry form or crew list. Current valid South African Sailing Membership Cards or similar proof of MNA Membership in cases of non-South Africans shall be presented at Registration.

The regatta is open to all keelboats with a valid COF.

3. SCHEDULE

3.1 Date of racing: 22 October 2017
Skippers 09h30, with race not to start before 10h00

4. MEASUREMENTS

Each boat handicap based on ABYC rating

5. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Sailing Instructions will be available from the Regatta Secretary on completion of registration formalities.

6. THE COURSES

The course to be sailed will be confirmed at the skippers briefing, but will consist of the Bellbouy and Safe Water Mark. The start location to be determined by shipping movements.

7. PENALTY SYSTEM

Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One-Turn Penalty.

8. SAFETY

8.1 Yachts shall comply with their class buoyancy and safety requirements.

8.2 Additional safety requirements may be set out in the Sailing Instructions.

9. RADIO COMMUNICATION

9.1 Each boat shall carry a VHF radio capable of transmitting on channels 06, 12, 14, 16 & 71

9.2 Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones.

10. PRIZES

Prizes will be awarded at the ABYC prize giving 2017-2018

11. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Neither the Organising Authority nor its officials or other persons associated with the organisation of the event will accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

12. INSURANCE

Each participating boat is encouraged to carry sufficient valid third-party liability insurance to cover any liability arising during the event.

Results – Race of the Cardinals Sunday 30 October

This was a medium distance race around Bellbuoy and the Port of Ngqura Lateral mark. We had a South West wind, that varied between 8 and 18 knots.

Mike Cullum was quick to get Malgas over the start line, followed by Fling, Tikkalox II and Sea-Esta, with Bateleur making a late start. But Jim Foot caught up and passed both Sea-Esta and Fling before the Ngqura port lateral mark. Tikkalox II and Fling had their bags out for a fun reach down to Ngqura. Then it was an afternoon of tacking back to the Port of Port Elizabeth, weaving between the wind shadows of the anchored ships in the road.

The results speak to good tactics, and how 5 minutes lost to retrieve a hat can cost you 3rd place!

Race of the Cardinals – Sunday 1st November

Nemesis, Malgas and Jellybaby contested this medium distance race around Bellbouy and out to Nqgura. The forecast rain and strong winds discouraged more entrants, but the wet and gale were delayed, with the yachts tacking in light, clear winds for nearly all of the 5 hours of the race.

The rain just got them in the last 3 minutes of the chase! Jellybaby (John Tudehope – 5h27m08s) took 1st place on handicap, followed by Malgas (Aubrey Cullum – 5h35m30s) and Nemesis (Tony Bailes – 5h38m03s).

The bar banter after the race revealed the real hardship (?):

The 10h00 sharp start did not deter certain members of the Jellybaby family from faffing around in her moorings at the time the start horn sounded.

With Nemisis and Malgas well on their way and cackling at Jellybaby’s tardiness Jellybaby was dealt another hammer blow to catching up when they were denied permission to leave Port and had to stand helplessly by to watch a Trawler limping into Port with the staggering movement of a drunken seaman on shore leave.

With that obstacle out of the way it appeared all systems go for Jellybaby as she started to pick her skirts up and chase the leading yachts.

But, more mayhem was to follow when Sean Wiseman, having neglected to read his cellphone manual – specifically the part that instructs the user how to turn his phone OFF – took a SOS call from work, Yup you guessed it – this THIRD hillock in the race meant that Jellybaby had to turn around and head for home, only for the client to call back to say; “Problem sorted”. The now dizzy crew finally got to start the race and head out for some serious catching up on the other 2 ‘stoves and cushions and ablutions’ boats with several more hands which were nowhere to be seen as Jellybaby was still inside the harbour – game on.

Once outside the harbour a a tactical turn allowed them to reach the Bellbouy 1st and set for a broad-reach to the Coega Port Mark.

Nemesis crossed the bow of Jellybaby at the PE Safewater mark and, at the Coega Port Mark was 4 min ahead.

With the wind freshening a sail change from the Number 1 jib down to the Number 3 which helped keep Jellybaby’s time cap inside of Nemesis as they charged down for the win.

Malgas also had a great sail enjoying her new “bow-sprit” and assymetrical.

All in all a good sail which ended with a serious down pour at the finish giving the boats a much needed wash off.

Medium Distance Race of Cardinals 20 October 2013

The Cardinal to Cardinal medium distance race sailed on Sunday 20 October started in what can only be described as fantastic sailing conditions with a light to moderate SW backing to a moderate to fresh SSE as the day progressed.

Malgas & Struan had good starts, however Malgas been under pressure for some time given her refit of new canvas and rigging plus a clean belly, stamped her intentions at the drop of the flag and maintained the lead for the remainder of the race. Sewen & Tikalox 2 where irritating each other for great part of the course, but Tikalox 2 took advantage of poor tacking by Sewen during the homeward leg and lead the way in. Struan lagging in 4th place  up to the turning mark after some serious gybing and near “broaching” with a dose of pain issued to the crew across their fingers from sheet burn, managed to haul-in and out sail both Tikalox 2 & Sewen.

The race also demonstrated that sailors do have “intuition”! The Cardinal Buoy off Coega Port entrance unbeknown to us yachties has been taken out of the water, this forced the fleet to head further out and use the Coega Port “Safe Water Mark” as their turning marker.
