Rose Bowl Ladies Race Results

21 November 2016

The annual Rose Bowl Ladies Race was contested on Sunday 20 November – the course took the yachts and their beautiful helmsmen North along the coast to a mark off of Ceoga.

Results:

  1. Malgas – 00:02:37:00 (Elapsed Time), 00:02:29:09 (Corrected Time), 0.95 (Handicap) – Helm: Fiona Clarke
  2. J Sea – 00:02:43:36 (Elapsed Time), 00:02:34:56 (Corrected Time), 0.947 (Handicap) – Helm: Sigi Bailes
  3. Walbanger – 00:02:56:14 (Elapsed Time), 00:02:55:21 (Corrected Time), 0.995 (Handicap) – Helm: Megan Tudehope

There is much talk of Sea Sickness affecting the results although it is apparent that Malgas was possessed of an extra bit of vooma as her elapsed time shows.

Results – Race of the Cardinals Sunday 30 October

1 November 2016

This was a medium distance race around Bellbuoy and the Port of Ngqura Lateral mark. We had a South West wind, that varied between 8 and 18 knots.

Mike Cullum was quick to get Malgas over the start line, followed by Fling, Tikkalox II and Sea-Esta, with Bateleur making a late start. But Jim Foot caught up and passed both Sea-Esta and Fling before the Ngqura port lateral mark. Tikkalox II and Fling had their bags out for a fun reach down to Ngqura. Then it was an afternoon of tacking back to the Port of Port Elizabeth, weaving between the wind shadows of the anchored ships in the road.

The results speak to good tactics, and how 5 minutes lost to retrieve a hat can cost you 3rd place!

Malgas wins Double Handed

7 September 2015

Seven yachts entered the first Nemesis Double Handed race in the 2015/16 series.

Sailed in light to very light to nothing conditions the fleet left the harbour to round the Bell Buoy, Channel Marker and finish back in the harbour.

Indicative of the fickle conditions the boats beat to the Bell buoy, then to the Channel Marker only to hit a wind shift (does the wind shift when there isn’t any?) around the channel marker necessitating another tack out to sea in order to make the mark.

Nemesis was first around the final mark and hoisted their spinnaker for a short time before having to resort to beating again to the harbour.

Challenging conditions indeed.

Nontheless, Malgas caught a decent wind shift approaching the final mark and gained significantly on Nemesis on the final leg, the same shift placed the two J27’s (J Sea and Jelly Baby) back within hailing distance of each other and they had a battle royale approaching the finish line with spinnakers flying and finishing within 11 seconds of each other.

BTW – Ask Jim Foot for an interpretation of RET (PO)!
