Pursuit Two Results

Pursuit Race 2 was sailed on Sunday 24 September 2017 – Breakwater start; Bell Buoy, Safe Water Mark and Harbour finish and sailed in better than expected conditions after the previous nights near ESE gale.

The Start had to be moved outside of the Port, Wallbanger acting as Committee Boat, was fortunate to have the assistance of Darryl Garner onboard who assisted with calling the boats to the line at their allocated time. Vincit2 was the 1st boat to go and was spot-on with her start time. Jsea & Malgas where “hard” on the start, Jsea managed to keep a boat length ahead. Wallbanger had to sail in the opposite direction to get sails up & trimmed before tacking out & playing catch-up.

After rounding Bellbuoy on their way to Safe-Water Mark, the fleet stayed together before spreading out. Jsea and Wallbanger rounded the SWM before Wallbanger passed Jsea. Jsea hauled up her spinnaker edging into the lead. Jsea pipped Wallbanger with less the 30 seconds to spare.

Frostbite Postponed

Due to unfavourable weather conditions predicted for Sunday, the Frostbite Race #2 is postponed until further notice.

ABYC is excited to start the formal Wednesday Night Sailing races as of next Wednesday 28th September. For the first three Wednesday’s we are especially encouraging the introduction of people new to sailing to join us. We are particularly encouraging you to introduce your black friends and colleagues to sailing, as part of ABYC’s efforts to transform our sport.

We plan to offer the complimentary boerie rolls again for the first Wednesdays sails. If any persons or companies would like to sponsor these boerie rolls after that, in exchange for advertising opportunities, please contact Alan, Frank or myself.

INGREDIENTS

1 knob butter
1 onion, finely slice
1 cup exotic mushrooms, sliced
45 ml balsamic vinegar
30 ml brown sugar
2 Boerewors
2 Portuguese Rolls
Coriander to garnish

METHOD

Melt a knob of butter in a pan and fry 1 finely sliced onion until golden.
Add exotic mushrooms, balsamic vinegar and brown sugar and stir until dissolved.
Increase heat and cook until caramelised.
Season to taste and spoon onto boerewors.

Opening of the 2016/17 Sailing Season

This past Sundays Opening of Season, one couldn’t have asked for a better start to the day  with sunny skies 20 degress, moderate ESE and an entertaining sea state. This year’s opening broke away from conventional by combining with the start of the sailing seasons 1st race FrostBite 1.

With 10 boats crowding the committee boat anchored off Hobie Pier, the usual bantering and chanting created a fantastic atmosphere on the water as Commodore Straton took the salute.

Things became serious once the Flags for start sequence for the seasons 1st race was displayed. A re-start was called due to the Race Officer losing a minute in the start sequence. The re-start saw Chinook with her new owner and old (finally getting some pointers), creating mayhem and forcing Nemesis to gybe away from the line.

The course – a beat to Bell buoy, broad reach to the wing mark and a reach to the start/finish at Hobie Pier – allowed the sailors to enjoy the various sailing options whilst at the same time shake out the stiffness in halyards and sheets, and flatten the crease’s in the sails

Nemesis rounded the Bell 1st with Jellybaby close behind followed by Chinook. Chinook lacked the navigational skills and couldn’t find the wing mark and settled to have a quick braai off their stern and thereby getting a DNF.

With over ¾ of the fleet completing and well on their way back to moorings, the wind as forecast freshened and a deteriorating sea-state, forced the Race Officer to up anchor and pull all markers resulting in Seaesta and Skybird getting a DNF.

A festive gathering on the Club Lawns by members, family and friends had quickly developed whilst enjoying the braai’s.

A big thanks to the Junior sailors for helping putting the buoys and tackle away. Thanks to Commercial Diving Contractors CDC for the use of their Rubber Duck.

A reminder that the Wednesday Nite sailing series begins this Wednesday. The 1st of the Nemesis Double Handed starts this Sunday. Be sure to stay close hauled to the ABYC web and Face Book site for NOR and other notices.

Frostbite NOR and Opening of the Season

The ABYC FROST BITE – Race 1 at the ALGOA BAY YACHT CLUB takes place on 04 September 2016.

NOTICE OF RACE

The Regatta is organized by the ALGOA BAY YACHT CLUB

1. RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2013 – 2016.
1.2 Boats participating in this regatta shall conform to the Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS) 2013 2016, this Notice of Race, and the Sailing Instructions.

2. ADVERTISING

Advertising is permitted subject to the limitations of ISAF Regulation 20.
Boats MAY be required to display advertising chosen and supplied by the organising authority.

3. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

3.1 In accordance with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Regulation 19 (Eligibility Code), all competitors (Helmspersons and all other crew) shall be members in good standing of a Yacht Club affiliated to and in good standing with South African Sailing or their Member National Authority in the case of non-South Africans. The Yacht Club name and membership details shall be stated on the entry form or crew list. Current valid South African Sailing Membership Cards or similar proof of MNA Membership in cases of non-South Africans shall be presented at Registration. N/A, however please ensure both your ABYC & SAS subscription is up-to-date and/or has your attention.

5. SCHEDULE

5.1. SKIPPERS: IOhOO – 04 September 2016 – outside Club Ward Room START: Start not before IOh30, but once “Turning” buoys are in place & committee boat is in position. WATCH FLAG SIGNALS. The Official Opening of Season will commence once the boats have Crossed through the Start Gate.

5.2. Measurement and inspection: N/A

5.3. Dates of racing: 04 SEPTEMBER 2016

5.4. Number of races: A minimum of 1 race is scheduled.

6. MEASUREMENTS: N/A

7. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS: Final sailing instructions will be given at the Skippers Briefing on Sunday 04/09/2016 @ IOhOO

9. THE COURSES: Details at Skippers

10. PENALTY SYSTEM: Rule 44.1 will apply.

11. SCORING: Normal Club Handicap will be applicable, as well as accumulation of points towards trophy

13. SAFETY
13.1 Yachts shall comply with their class buoyancy and safety requirements.
13.2 Youth category competitors shall wear a personal buoyancy aid at all times while afloat in a yacht.
13.3 Wet or dry suits do not constitute adequate buoyancy!
13.4 Additional safety requirements may be set out in the Sailing Instructions.

15. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY: Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Neither the Organising Authority nor its officials or other persons associated with the organisation of the event will accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

16. INSURANCE: Each participating boat is encouraged to carry sufficient valid third-party liability insurance to cover any liability arising during the event.
