ABYC Deck Repairs

17 January 2015

After an engineers inspection last year it was revealed that the deck support columns and sections of the wall outside the administration block needed some repair.

Anderson and Son Construction (who are presently finishing up the NSRI’s magnificent new premises next door) presented the winning quotation and on Monday 12 January embarked on the following:

Supply and repair deck support columns.
Supply, prep and paint all support columns.
Clean exposed metal bolts and paint to spec.
Remove plaster at affected areas and repair cracks.
Supply and fit reinforcing mesh and replaster.
Supply prep and paint affected wall.

With the 60th 505 World Championships coming up between 23 March and 3 April this year we are grateful for the peace of mind that these repairs will give us.

As funds become available Exco will continue to give focus on ensuring that the club is in good repair so that our support of sailing in Port Elizabeth can continue.

On another note – we are experiencing a surge in new member applications – a lot of them from youngsters introduced to ABYC via the sailing school and would like to extend our thanks to all who promote sailing and the club. Your enthusiasm to share the sport of sailing is certainly bearing fruit.

Nomination Slate

All members are encouraged to participate in the club affairs, and propose/second members whom they wish to see serve them on exco, or on the various sub-committees.

Your contributions are vital to the running of our successful and vibrant club.

Ed: With two major events coming up in 2015 – The 505 World Championships and the Vasco Da Gama Ocean Race (Durban to Port Elizabeth) you can expect your term on Exco to be an exciting and rewarding one.

Do not assume that if someone has been nominated that ascension to that position is a forgone conclusion – PUT YOUR NAME down if you know that you have something to contribute. The more persons we have nominated for positions on Exco the better for our club going forward. Let’s not have the usual suspects putting their hands up and volunteering – we need younger people and new ideas, different viewpoints and enthusiasm.

A new Exco is a chance to see your wishes implemented whilst having the satisfaction and reward of a ‘job well done’.

The best time to braai at ABYC

We often get asked by members if they may use the braai facility on the front lawn of the club and, just to clear up any confusion, the answer is Yes, Yes, Yes, NB Yes.

As an upstanding member all we ask is that you bring your own wood/charcoal (in other words, burning of club chairs and tables might be frowned upon) and invite fellow members or guests to join you.

We anxiously keep an eye on the weather and particularly enjoy a late Sunday Afternoon braai which allows us to catch the last of the music on the deck. Also with the bar closing earlier than normal we have a built in curfew ……

Next time you see us starting a fire you are welcome to join! “Charlie – please remember to bring a couple of prawns for the Barbie!”

ABYC Braai — A typical South African Braai with a unique twist – members of the ABYC get to use the magnificent braai facilities whilst enjoying sundowners to a magnificent view.
