ABYC Deck Repairs

After an engineers inspection last year it was revealed that the deck support columns and sections of the wall outside the administration block needed some repair.

Anderson and Son Construction (who are presently finishing up the NSRI’s magnificent new premises next door) presented the winning quotation and on Monday 12 January embarked on the following:

  1. Supply and repair deck support columns.
  2. Supply, prep and paint all support columns.
  3. Clean exposed metal bolts and paint to spec.
  4. Remove plaster at affected areas and repair cracks.
  5. Supply and fit reinforcing mesh and replaster.
  6. Supply prep and paint affected wall.

With the 60th 505 World Championships coming up between 23 March and 3 April this year we are grateful for the peace of mind that these repairs will give us.

As funds become available Exco will continue to give focus on ensuring that the club is in good repair so that our support of sailing in Port Elizabeth can continue.

On another note – we are experiencing a surge in new member applications – a lot of them from youngsters introduced to ABYC via the sailing school and would like to extend our thanks to all who promote sailing and the club. Your enthusiasm to share the sport of sailing is certainly bearing fruit.

There is a reason why our Sunday lunchtime troubadour and friend, Eric Pow Chong, is so popular – quite simply he enjoys what he does and responds in a warm manner to everyone when he plays music on the deck.

This past Sunday was especially special as well known Port Elizabeth based singer, Charmaine Allison and friends joined Eric in an impromptu concert on the deck, singing a couple of numbers.

Charmaine is mother to Idols Finalist Melissa Allison – read about Melissa and Charmaine HERE and HERE.

Charmaine performed Simply the Best by Tina Turner and was certainly prepared for the job in her skin tight leather pants and attitude to match.

Allison’s high energy and clear enjoyment got almost everyone dancing in appreciation – even Peter and Rose Dymond joined in in the fun.

Then Charmaine teamed up with friends Lorraine Dodgen and Sharon Oosthuizen and the trio sang the Whitney Houston song, I will always love you.

Charmaine and Eric, you were quite simply the best we have ever seen yet!

Help us make a decision please

The canvas ‘walls’ on the north  (facing the slipway) section of the ABYC deck have served their purpose and now are fast becoming a bit of an eyesore.

Your committee has obtained quotes to replace this section with aluminium and glass with opening windows – depending on a number of options available we are looking at between R18 and R29 000.00 to do so.

More importantly – if you know anyone who is able to sponsor all or a large part of the aluminium or glass please put them in contact with Sean Wiseman or Russel Morgan.

Rugby at ABYC

Who was it that said; “ABYC is a sailing club and not a sport club?”

Saturday saw perfect weather and a chock full ABYC deck as eager sports fans watched the Southern Kings beat the Lions at Ellis Park in Johannesburg 23-18.

Despite this victory the Kings have failed to qualify to play in Super Rugby.

Thanks for visit Queen Mary

The visit of the Queen Mary 2 to the Port Elizabeth harbour on 8 April 2012 brought with it an unexpected bonanza for the club as visitors and members alike descended upon our deck for a sundowner and front seat view of the stately liner’s departure on her voyage to Cape Town.

With only one barman on duty our President, Chris Grylls, assumed the mantle of additional barman whilst waiting on the imminent arrival of ‘reinforcements’ to assist behind the bar – well done and thank you Chris, we think you have the makings of a fine retirement job there!

Isn’t it amazing what a little bit of well timed marketing can do?

The Queen Mary 2 ocean liner will be docking in the Port Elizabeth harbour at 08h00 on Monday 8 April 2013.

This is an historic first time visit for this graceful liner.

The Queen Mary 2 is scheduled to depart for Cape Town at 18h00 and, in my humble opinion, the deck of our Yacht Club should make for a spectacular viewing point, so, I am just asking;

“Will we see you on the deck of ABYC for a sundowner to toast the Queen Mary 2 bon voyage?”
