Red Jellybaby Anyone?

With not a Red score (DNS or DNF) in 5 races Sean Wiseman’s J27 – Jellybaby – is showing that consistency wins the day.

Five races have been sailed and Jellybaby boasts 2 bullets and 3 third places with one discard to be on 8 points, followed by Nemesis with one bullet and two seconds on 11 points.

Saturday’s race was sailed on a long course with harbour start, leaving the PE Safewater mark to Port, the Nqura Safewater mark to Port, back to the PE Safewater mark to Starboard and a harbour finish. Fairly consistent South west winds ranging between 10 and 16 knots made for interesting sailing with the fleet managing to carry spinnakers out the PE Port and down to Nqura for a long beat back to PE.

Jellybaby, with Andrew Ward at the helm, managed to make up lots of time after electing to sail straight past the last turning mark and along the coastline before tacking for the Port Entrance – sometimes a considered flyer does pay off.

Many newbies were onboard various yachts – all credit to Mark Dawson for keeping the flag flying as we adjust our sails to concentrate even more on sailing.

NOR Scimitar Cup Race 3 & 4

The Scimitar Cup Race 3 & 4 will be sailed at Algoa Bay Yacht Club on 3rd March 2018

NOTICE OF RACE

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2017 – 2020.

1.2 The Organising Authority is the ABYC, under the auspices of South African Sailing.

1.3 The Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS) 2017 – 2020, the Class Rules of the participating classes, the Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions will apply.

2 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

2.1 In accordance with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Regulation 19 (Eligibility Code), all competitors (Helmspersons and all other crew) shall be members in good standing of a Yacht Club affiliated to and in good standing with South African Sailing or their Member National Authority in the case of non-South Africans. The Yacht Club name and membership details shall be stated on the entry form or crew list. Current valid South African Sailing Membership Cards or similar proof of MNA Membership in cases of non-South Africans shall be presented at Registration.

2.2 Entry Fee of R100 per boat

2.3 The regatta is open to all keelboats with a valid COF.

3 SCHEDULE

3.1 Date of racing: 03 March 2018. Skippers 13h30, with race not to start before 14h00

3.2 Number of races: A maximum of 2 races are scheduled.

4 MEASUREMENTS
Each boat handicap based on ABYC or ORC (if available) rating

5 THE COURSES
The courses to be sailed will be confirmed at the skippers briefing

6 PENALTY SYSTEM

Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One- Turn Penalty.

7 SAFETY

7.1 Yachts shall comply with their class buoyancy and safety requirements.

7.2 Additional safety requirements may be set out in the Sailing Instructions.

8 RADIO COMMUNICATION

8.1 Each boat shall carry a VHF radio capable of transmitting on channels 06, 12, 14, 16 & 71

8.2 Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones.

9 PRIZES

Prizes will be awarded at the ABYC prize giving 2017-2018

10 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See RRS 4, Decision to Race. Neither the Organising Authority nor its officials or other persons associated with the organisation of the event will accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

Scimitar Cup – and THAT Rabbit Start

7 February 2017

Three races were sailed on Sunday 5 February 2017.

The first race involved a harbour start, starboard rounding of the seaward mark, port rounding of the landward mark and a finish back at the seaward mark – close racing saw Malgas and Wallbanger finish with a second of each other and Malgas ahead on corrected time.

The second race was characterised by the introduction of a Rabbit Start with the rabbit (Fling) sailing on a broad reach away from the pin for 2.5 minutes then returning to the pin to open a gate on the five minute gun. I recall hearing that this version was chosen to minimise the chances of Fling being T-Boned. Well, as they say in the classics; “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry!”

On the five minute Wallbanger was well placed to cross the (small and slowly opening) gate but wide eyes were observed on the Sadler 26 as louder and louder cries of “starboard” were directed towards the Cape 28 sailing gaily on Port tack astern of Fling. Collusion avoided and a great start for Wallbanger just squeezing through the gate.

Some messing around with the asymmetric spinnaker cost Wallbanger and, we suspect that Malgas throttled back a bit to allow Wallbanger to cross first – “Something to do with the first finisher having to pick up the top mark, Mike?”

With a steady breeze on the course the fleet decided to sail a third and final shortened race which saw some close racing on the first beat – Malgas and Wallbanger almost hugging whilst Fling and Skybird passed sugar and coffee across to each other almost neck and neck the entire way.

With a bit of thought we could try the 5O5 Dinghy rabbit start next – that method could help make the wide eyes less wide!

2017 Scimitar Cup NOR

This year’s Scimitar Cup format will be short races around the Bay furniture and cans with the possibility of 1 medium distance race. Courses will be announced at the skippers meetings, dependent on wind direction and shipping movements. Organisers are aiming for 1.5 to 2 hour race courses.

Races 1 & 2: Sunday 22nd January 2017 – Skippers at 09h30, start at 10h30
Races 3 & 4: Sunday 5th February 2017 – Skippers at 09h30, start at 10h30

2016 Scimitar Cup Series

The NOR and SI for the up-coming Scimitar Cup Series, to be sailed over Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st January. We are aiming for four races. If weather is unsuitable, the regatta will be postponed to the following weekend of 6-7 February.

Participating crews and their families/friends are invited to join in the braai at our clubhouse after racing on the Sunday.
