The 2013-14 edition of the famous Clipper Round the World Yacht Race left Rio de Janeiro yesterday ahead of the 3,000 mile race to the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The spectacular new fleet of twelve matched 70 foot ocean racing yachts sailed by international amateur crew from all walks of life, including a record number of 17 South Africans, will berth at the at the Victoria & Alfred Water Front from Saturday 26 October.
Of the 17 South Africans sailing in the race, a total of 16 South Africans will sail on Investec Africa (the dark green icon above) as she circumnavigates the globe.

The B/One is an exciting, new 7m (23ft) trailer-able, one-design sport boat currently under construction by Bavaria Yachtbau in Giebelstadt, Germany. Bavaria asked Farr Yacht Design for an economical one-design that would impress advanced sailors with excellent performance, yet be easy to handle and operate for the weekend sailor and his/her family. Farr Yacht Design, the designers of the B/One, have met these requirements with a technologically advanced hull shape developed from the Volvo Open 70 and Farr 400, an easy to use sailplan, and interior features you would expect to find on a boat 3 feet longer. The B/One has the power to weight ratio to perform well both upwind and downwind. The 34m2 (377ft2) of upwind sail area is set on an aluminum mast. The 48m2 (517ft2) asymmetrical spinnaker flies on a 1.3m (4.3ft) retractable bow sprit providing plenty of downwind horsepower. The keel and rudder are retractable making docking or anchoring in shallow water possible. The retractable keel also makes slip launching a breeze and allows for very low trailering heights, so that the boat can be towed by a relatively small vehicle. The B/One promises to be an absolute delight to sail and operate with unique features from bow to stern.
This one will also set you back between $36 000 and $41 000 – once again don’t expect to see too many of these 23 foot pocket rockets in a South African marina near you!

The J/70 Speedster (22.75 feet) is J/Boats’ first ramp-launchable keelboat – designed to fulfill the growing need for an easy-to-own, high performance one-design that is exciting to sail, stable enough sailboat for the family, and built to last.
The 11′ long cockpit and moderate height boom allows for easy crew movement across the cockpit while tacking and jibing.
As of December 2012 the price was “$46,000 to $49,000 FOB RI, depending on sails, trailer, and outboard.” So, I guess we will not see many of these machines in South Africa in the near future!
