Flying Phantom One Design

11 June 2014

The FLYING PHANTOM is the first production flying catamaran for general public, it is opening a new era in sailing; foiling above the water from 7 knots of wind and reach more than 30 knots of speed in 15-20 knots of wind !

The revolution is on, realize your dream, fly above the water !

ABYC Seal

24 May 2014

This very calm seal popped into the Algoa Bay Yacht Club to say hello on Saturday evening 24 May 2014.

Apologies about the light.

She lay on the side of the slipway, chilling and listening to the music – as she appeared in distress, the Sailing Commodore phoned our local Bayworld who will check on her in the morning.

According to Bayworld these seals are not used to people so do not run away or recognise two legged beasts as potentially threatening.

Still – I am not going to get much closer in case she gets a little angry with all the attention.

Take a Sail With Me – ABYC Week 2014 Race 4

9 May 2014

GoPro time lapse from the 4th and final race sailed on Wild Thing (Russel Morgan) in ABYC Week 1 to 4 May 2014.

The Algoa Bay Yacht Club’s annual prestige regatta was sailed in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in very light conditions and produced a first in that not one race was sailed over the entire course. Four races were shortened and two abandoned as the fleet struggled in extremely light conditions – https://abyc.co.za/another-first-for-abyc/

In this recording you will see a bit of argy bargy towards the 12 second mark as Wild Thing starboards Orion (Kerry Bonnage) who starboards Unmatched (Graham ‘Weather Mark Wentie’ Wentworth).

Unmatched proceeds to foul Orion, bump Malgas (Tony Bailes) and then get tethered to the weather mark – earning enough penalties to make any crew dizzy!

Take a Sail With Me – ABYC Week 2014 Race 3

8 May 2014

Wild Thing – a Pacer 27 racing Race 3 of Algoa Bay Yacht Club’s annual regatta – ABYC Week. Sailing in Algoa Bay off Port Elizabeth. The only way we could ‘pretend’ that we were sailing in lots of wind was to speed up this Go Pro time lapse recording.

Graham proposes to Marian

2 May 2014

One of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club’s long standing members, Graham Wentworth, who basically grew up and learned to sail at the club in Port Elizabeth is attending the ABYC Week Regatta taking place from 1 to 4 May 2014.

Now Graham was ragged a bit – mainly by sailing wives I believe – around the teak reef last night about his tardiness in popping the question to long term First Mate, Marian Galloway.

After the skippers meeting this morning, Tony Bailes asked the assembled sailors to please sit tight whilst we waited for; “Captain Jack Sparrow from Slumtown Express to make his appearance to make an announcement of great import!”

Calling Marian up, Graham went down on one knee and popped the question – there was a collective sigh of anticipation as his beloved paused whilst she contemplated her answer……. which was Yes – to the great delight of the sailors witnessing the occasion.

Now – was that a bit of a tear I saw in your eye, Graham?
