Get a rare peek inside a racing yacht. The Explora was christened during November 2013 in Cape Town, from where she will set sail for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 4 January 2014.

The start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race in Sydney, Australia took place on 26 December 2013. The start of the race was in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, and the finish will be in the Derwent River, Hobart, Tasmania. The race is a 628 nautical mile passage race.

The start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart on a sparkling Sydney Harbour was very fast. A reach down the habour was led by Wild Oats XI from Perpetual LOYAL and Beau Geste. The first two maxis (100 footers) were chased by and nearly caught by Karl Kwok’s new 80 footer. A real drag race that saw them exit the harbour in a very fast time.

The world’s oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, yet, they are the least understood and most vulnerable resource we have on the planet.
We desperately need to know more about relationship between the oceans and climate change. Ocean acidification is one of the most serious threats to our planet and we have not begun to properly understand its causes or effects.
Traditionally, large ships have been used to take measurements, however, these ships are very expensive and burn huge amounts of polluting diesel fuel during their operations.
Unmanned vehicles, like gliders, and drifting bouy’s have recently been deployed with promising results, however they are very slow (~1knots) and still require a ship to deliver them to their start location.
Saildrone redefines the world of ocean monitoring by going further, faster and more cost effectively than any other technology on the planet.

Now this video depicts the first sailing of an ABYC member’s yacht. See dolphins and the harbour. Can you guess whose boats this is? A clue: The owner doesn’t drink the drink for which his boat is named!
