Sailors Lounge Members Afternoon

On Sunday 22 March 2015 at 15h00 around 60 ABYC members attended the official opening of the Sailors Lounge for the 60th SAP 5O5 World Championships.

All agreed that the facility and operation are absolutely World Class – something we last saw when the World Cup was here in 2010. The daily debriefing sessions with full analytics and video for 5O5 competitors is something we are all looking forward to.

Access to the lounge will be restricted to sailors and VIP’s from now on, though.

Chatting to the guys from GMR Marketing was a bit of a revelation as, unbidden, they were full of praise for the support and friendliness that they had received from ABYC members as well as the general population in Port Elizabeth.

The club is also looking stunning as the painters do final touch ups.

The hosting of this event is a wonderful opportunity for members to experience world class sailing and one more arrow in the quiver to further cement our city as “The Watersport Capital”.

60th SAP 505 World Championships Media Accreditation

21 March 2015

The media will be well taken care of on the ground and electronically at the 60th SAP 505 World Championships from 23 March to 3 April 2015 as SAP will be providing rights free images, audio, video, content, results and analysis on a daily basis.

Dedicated writers, video and photographers will produce content and the official social media channels will be fed with daily, hourly and by second updates.

The first 5O5 launches at ABYC

On Friday 20 March, with feverish building activity going on, the first 5O5 dinghy to be competing in the 60th SAP 5O5 World Championships gave the upgraded slipway a test and sailed out the channel and into the harbour.

Sail number 8584 – a South African entry by Hans Rogotski and Peter Roos from Point Yacht Club now claim the honour of being first to test the water. Click on the images to see a HUGE(ish) version.

5O5 International Jury get wheels

Local Uitenhage based automotive manufacturer, Volkswagen, sponosored the use of a Caravelle by the international jury for the 23 March to 3 April 2015 World Champs.

I got to drive out to VWSA early on Friday morning, 20 March to fetch the vehicle.

This time-lapse shows the journey back from the VWSA Technical Centre to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club – proud hosts of this prestigious event.

The organising committee for the 60th SAP 5o5 World Championships being held from 23 March to 3 April 2015, are holding a ‘Volunteers get together’ at ABYC on Thursday 12 March 2015 at 18h00.

The following volunteer positions are open:

Rescue Crew – 8 people required
Measurement (23rd to 27th March) – 10 people required
Tuck Shop Saturday 21st to Saturday April 4th day time only – 2 people per shift (Mornings and Afternoons (08h00 to 17h30)
Lunch Pack Coordinator – daily 8h30 to 10h30 daily
Registration Set-up – (23rd to 27th March)
Opening Ceremony Coordinator
Midway Party Coordinator
Closing / Prizegiving Coordinator

Your help will be hugely appreciated and rewarding from a personal perspective along with giving you unique access to some of the world’s top 5o5 dinghy sailors.
