Preparations for 60th 505 World Championships on the boil

Writing in the 505 Worlds sailing newsletter on Monday, Peter Funke, the South African 505 Class Association President says; “The preparations for the 2015 World Championships are progressing extremely well. The Algoa Bay Yacht Club in the beautiful Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth, and the South African 505 Class Association have joined forces and formed an event Organising Commitee which is making excellent headway with its preparations.”

The 505 is a two person racing dinghy that offers fast and exciting sailing. From 23 March to 3 April Port Elizabeth will be host to hundreds of sailors and supporters contesting the 60th sailing of the 505 World Championships.

The local committee of host club Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) have been hard at work arranging the bridge boat, mark laying and rescue craft with the assistance of the South African Navy. “The 2015 Worlds Organising Committee is also working hard together with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, South African Sailing as well as the local and national Government to make this event very special,” continued Funke.

MyPE has sponsored technical support and web hosting for the 2015 505 World Championships who have reciprocated by providing links to accommodation in Port Elizabeth.

As Funke said to the international community in his newsletter; “The section on accommodation on the website (www.505worlds2015.com) is live. Just click on “MYPE Accommodation” and you will find links to all types of accommodation from budget bed and breakfast to luxurious guest houses.

Last week the Eastern Cape Sports Commission provided their letter of confirmation and support for the 505 World Championships 2015. This is the last step in the process of obtaining the blessing from SASCOC (the South African Sports Commission and Olympic Committee) to hold the 60th 505 World Championships in Port Elizabeth.

As part of the local organisation’s preparations for the 2015 Worlds, a number of 505 teams from across South African will be taking part in the 2014 Kiel Week and 2014 World Championships in Kiel.

“We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful country,” concluded Funke.

The SAP 5O5 World Championship 2014 will take place in Kiel, Germany from 13-22 August, 2014. More than 130 crews from over 15 nations are expected to descend on Kiel to compete for the title of SAP 5O5 World Champion.

ABYC Seal

This very calm seal popped into the Algoa Bay Yacht Club to say hello on Saturday evening 24 May 2014.

Apologies about the light.

She lay on the side of the slipway, chilling and listening to the music – as she appeared in distress, the Sailing Commodore phoned our local Bayworld who will check on her in the morning.

According to Bayworld these seals are not used to people so do not run away or recognise two legged beasts as potentially threatening.

Still – I am not going to get much closer in case she gets a little angry with all the attention.

Take a Sail With Me – ABYC Week 2014 Race 4

The Algoa Bay Yacht Club’s annual prestige regatta was sailed in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in very light conditions and produced a first in that not one race was sailed over the entire course. Four races were shortened and two abandoned as the fleet struggled in extremely light conditions – https://abyc.co.za/another-first-for-abyc/

In this recording you will see a bit of argy bargy towards the 12 second mark as Wild Thing starboards Orion (Kerry Bonnage) who starboards Unmatched (Graham ‘Weather Mark Wentie’ Wentworth).

Unmatched proceeds to foul Orion, bump Malgas (Tony Bailes) and then get tethered to the weather mark – earning enough penalties to make any crew dizzy!
