2-014 Centenary Cup Sailing Instructions

The Sailing Committee is heralding the changes in approach with the 2014 Centenary Cup Sailing Instructions.

Hennie Haasbroek and his committee have recognised that many sailors feel uncomfortable with around the cans racing as the Centenary Cup has been in the past so they have introduced a new format – Medium Distance racing/cruising on two days and only one day of round the cans. A format that is surely to find favour with sailors at ABYC.

This season’s Centenary Cup will be sailed on 24, 27 and 28 September 2014. Four races are planned with two being medium distance races and the scheduled time of the warning signal for the first race each day is 11H00. Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 10h00 on the day it will take effect.

Pursuit 1 Results

The first pursuit race was sailed on Sunday 21 September 2014. A changed and shortened course saw the boats sailing from a harbour start, to the Bellbouy and to a harbour finish. The Channel Marker leg was removed as the start was later than intended.

The boats left individually according to their handicap and rounded the Bellbouy  to port. A 10 to 15 knot South Easter made for an interesting beat to the Bellbouy and a straight run back to the harbour for most of the fleet.

In hindsight – the offshore course paid more than the inshore course taken by Jellybaby, Wild Thing and Tehilah who all had to escape the clutches of the land.

Wild Thing once again had to be content with whizzing down the original course (to the Channel Marker and then the Harbour) in order to make any sort of decent headway. Of course they overshot the layline (fun being the paramount thought on the old surfers minds!). The charge back down to the harbour did see Wild Thing pass Jellybaby who, with only two intrepid souls on board, were having a lesson in how NOT to drop a spinnaker just outside the harbour mouth.

Taking the consolation prize Wild Thing did the trip in 1 hour 35 minutes – 2 minutes and 37 seconds faster than winner, Rob Smith on Tikalox, but not fast enough to gain first place as they started 33 minutes and 19 seconds after Fling.

The prize for sailing must go to Jellybaby though, who sailed two up and held their own all the way.

The Sailing Committee has decreed that the bulk of their future events will be sailed around the furniture with only a small portion of events being sailed around the cans.

Pursuit Race 1 – Sunday 21 September

Although a pursuit race, finish times will be taken by the RO in order to calculate an elapsed time to be used for Bart’s Bash.

The course distance is 13 Miles.

Start Time: 10:00

If start time needs to change due to shipping it will be announced at 9:30 and will be published on the white board.

Starting sequence will commence at 9:55. After the first start, only a sound signal will be given for the next handicap as start. See Table Below.

Notice of Entry

Each skipper must write their vessels name on the white board prior to race or make sure the race officer records it.

Start / Finish Line: This will be between the Starboard Lateral mark of the Yacht basin breakwater and the Port lateral mark of the ore quay.

Any changes to start/finish will be announced at 9:30 and will be published on the white board.

Course: Start -> Bell-Buoy to Port -> PE Safe water mark to Port -> Harbour finish.

2014 Sailpast

The Windguru predicted a warm, overcast day with a light East – perfect bobbing weather for a sailpast.

As Sunday drew closer more and more young dinghy sailors put heir hands up eager to sail on the big ocean.

The first indication of a wonderful sailpast were early reports of major spring cleaning sessions the Saturday before – I didn’t hear any reports of sailors giving up watching the Springboks, though!

On Sunday morning at 10h00 the carpark was already filling up and dinghy sails were visible.

Shepherded by three support boats manned by Ronnie Baer, John Tudehope, Gordon van Zyl and their eager crews the dinghy fleet began to leave the harbour at 11h00 – destination Shark Rock Pier and a couple of hours of fun coupled with a huge sense of achievement with the bonus of adequate heroic stories for the coming school week.

Gaily decorated yachts began leaving the moorings – Harry Lamprecht’s, Lady, must come in for special mention as she was expertly decorated with flags, flags and more flags.

Walking along the moorings it was with gratutitude, wonder and awe that one was able to see the gaps from vacant yachts off on a little adventure to salute the start of what will be an awesome sailing season with two major high profile international events – the 505 World Championships and the Vasco Da Gamma Race – coming to Port Elizabeth in 2015.

The President (Chris Grylls), Commodore (Alan Straton) and Special Guests – Nelson Mandela Bay Metroplolitan Municipality Councillor Marion Harning and Redhouse Yacht Club Commodore Andrew Martin – were whisked out to a point off of Shark Rock Pier by kind courtesy of Raggy Charters and Lloyd Edwards on the boat Winkle.

Pick down and the boats began their sail from close to Bird Rock to pass in line astern of Winkle on the Shark Rock Pier side with Vice Commodore Sailing, Hennie Haasbroek leading on his magnificently restored RCOD, Sewen.

Eager young sailors stood up on their Optimists and Lasers, saluting the President and Commodore who acknowledged and welcomed them to the 2014/15 sailing season.

Huge soap bubbles floated on the surface, water balloons flew in the air and buckets of water were thrown to cool unsuspecting people down – laughter flowed on the air and the fleet made it’s merry way home to waiting braai fires, liquid libation and tall stories.

On this day, the 55th birthday of the club, every member was 55 – for some it was a revelation to feel so young and for others a consternation.

For some it was standing room only as the braai area, downstairs tables and chairs overflowed with members enjoying the club – some say that it is a worry that we may be running out of space, I say that that ‘worry’ is a blessing.

2013/14 Sailing Season Awards

This year’s prize giving on Saturday 21 June 2014 saw junior and senior sailors being recognised for their sailing achievements over the course of the 2013/14 sailing season. Malgas’ consistency helped them sweep the table to take bulk of the silver-ware, and deservingly so. The combination of Tony and Ziggy’s sailing skills and competitiveness plus a relatively “new crew” to sailing, gave them the continued edge over other boats. Until another boat of the same calibre enters the fray there will be no stopping them, time will tell!
