Pursuit Two Results

Pursuit Race 2 was sailed on Sunday 24 September 2017 – Breakwater start; Bell Buoy, Safe Water Mark and Harbour finish and sailed in better than expected conditions after the previous nights near ESE gale.

The Start had to be moved outside of the Port, Wallbanger acting as Committee Boat, was fortunate to have the assistance of Darryl Garner onboard who assisted with calling the boats to the line at their allocated time. Vincit2 was the 1st boat to go and was spot-on with her start time. Jsea & Malgas where “hard” on the start, Jsea managed to keep a boat length ahead. Wallbanger had to sail in the opposite direction to get sails up & trimmed before tacking out & playing catch-up.

After rounding Bellbuoy on their way to Safe-Water Mark, the fleet stayed together before spreading out. Jsea and Wallbanger rounded the SWM before Wallbanger passed Jsea. Jsea hauled up her spinnaker edging into the lead. Jsea pipped Wallbanger with less the 30 seconds to spare.

First 2017 Pursuit Race Results

PURSUIT RACE 1 – 17 September 2017 – RESULTS

Course: Harbour Start/Bellbuoy/Harbour Finish

Weather & Sea: Easterly 15-20Kn strengthening; bumpy with some over-the-side wake-up knocks.

  3. Sea-Esta – Muira – Jimmy Swinnerton
  4. Skybird – Joe Schable
  5. Zula – Muira – Rod
  6. Wanderer – Sadler 26, Co Skippered: Ian Bancroft/Des

A good turn-out which bodes well for future upcoming races. This considering several boats are still undergoing refurbishment plus the likes of Tikalox/J-Sea/Struan/Seralon/Fling, who had work or prior arrangements.

Todays race was a close call for New Wave & Seasta, who could have finished ahead of Malgas had they maintained radio watch and time keeping. Zula had a good start even though it was somewhat unorthodox. Zula maintained a good line out of the harbour until the “corner wall” at the container berth forced them to tack.

Skybird actually sailed with crew onboard (skipper + 2) and came flying in to cross the finish line.

The new owner of Wanderer, with the experienced Ian Bancroft guiding them, enjoyed their first sail out into the bay.

Notice of Race & Sailing Instructions: Frostbite Pursuit Series – September to December 2017

1. RULES

1.1 The race will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020 (RRS).

2. RACE SCHEDULE

2.1 The series consists of a staggered yacht start according to handicap – see example in Annexure.
2.2 Race dates: Sunday 17 September 2017 (This will form part of the International Bart’s Bash sailing event). Other dates to be advised

3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted at or before the Skippers Meeting prior to the start of the races. Skippers Meeting at 09h00 of race day.
3.2 Shipping movements and/or weather considerations may change the start, course and finish.
3.3 This NOR can also be construed to be the SI Sailing Instructions – standard sailing regulations will apply.

4. RACE REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Open to all keelboats with a qualified skipper on board.
4.2 Valid COFs required.

5. THE COURSE

5.1 The courses to be sailed will be as follows:Around the Algoa Bay furniture so as to suit the prevailing wind on the day averaging between two and four hours of sailing.

6. VENUE

6.1 Racing will take place off-shore within Algoa Bay, proceeding from the ABYC.

7. START AND FINISH

7.1 Harbour start: the start line will be between the General Goods terminal and the Ore terminal. The start warning signal will not be before 09h30. Start time subject to shipping movements.
7.2 Harbour finish: the finish line will be between green light on the Ore terminal and the ABYC Flagpole. Finish line may change due to shipping traffic.

8. SCORING

8.1 The scoring system is as follows:
Two races are required to be completed to constitute this series.
(a) When only two races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores.
(b) When three or four races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

9. SAFETY REGULATIONS

9.1 Check-Out and Check-In Procedures, sign in and out as per normal, and additionally you must enter you boat name on the day of sailing with the Race Officer.
9.2 A boat that retires from a race shall notify the Race Officer as soon as possible via cellphone (provided at Skippers Meeting).

10. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

10.1 Competitors participate in the races entirely at their own risk. See SSR Rule 4: Decision to Race. ABYC and the organisers will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the races. Each participating boat is encouraged to carry sufficient valid third-party liability insurance to cover any liability arising during the event

Frostbite Pursuit Race 2017

ABYC Annual Prize-giving – Saturday 8th July 2017

We enjoyed an extra special prize-giving on Saturday evening, with awards being made for yachting, dinghy sailing and club service!  Anna-Mari and her team of helpers had magnificently decorated the Chartroom.

  • IBIS Cup for Lazer 4.7 successes was awarded to Jordan van Zyl (14th in Laser Nationals, 2nd in Dinghy Race Series, 3rd ABYC Inter-clubs)
  • PA Park Cup for Lasers won by Charlie Hills (11th Nationals, 13th EC Champs, 3rd ABYC Inter-clubs)
  • YELB Floating Trophy for RS Teras taken Luke Weddell (13th Spain Worlds, 1st EC Champs, 3rd WC Champs, 1st Tera Nationals)
  • Sparrow Cup for 1st Junior Double-handed awarded to Jenna Bailes (crew: Sophia Hynch, RYC, for 1st in 420 Youth nationals)
  • Giles Trophy for most Progressive Dinghy Sailor earned by Emma Lucas (8th on the national RS Tera Pro Leader Board)
  • Edith Abbot Cup for Most Promising Junior: Tamryn Bailes (3rd/1st girl on RS Tera Pro Leader Board, RS Tera Nationals: 7th/2nd girl, 5th RS Tera Worlds selection)
  • DeVet Trophy for Most Promising Junior Skipper awarded to Jordan van Zyl (Skipper of 3rd place in J22 Youth Keelboats Champs 2016)
  • James Searle Cup for assistance to our Sailing School awarded to Roger Lucas & Gordon van Zyl

Special/Service Awards:

  • Barry Jones Memorial Cup for the most active ABYC sailor: Joe Schable, who took Skybird out 79 time this past year. John Tudehope sailed Wallbanger out 48 times and Jerome Putter cast off Seralon II 39 times from moorings this year.
  • Algoa Bay Cruising Trophy earned by the Bailes Family, for 4300 miles logged participating in the Cape2Rio (on Ray of Light), PE to Cape Town delivery & Mykonos race Series
  • Oddy Trophy awarded to Angela and Andrew Ward in recognition of earning 4th pace at the Hobie 16 Invitational 2016
  • Ruby Walker Cup awarded to Leon van Niekerk for his racing under the ABYC flag at Royal Cape, including Chinook taking 3rd place in the Division 2 of the Mykonos Series
  • Longworth Cup was awarded to Jerome Putter for his perennial willingness to take novice sailors out on Wednesday evening sails
  • President’s Cup was awarded to John Tudehope for his Vasco, Mossel Bay and Mykonos racing, for enthusiastically competing in most of ABYC’s regattas and his service to the Sailing Committee and SAS Eastern Cape. 

 

ABYC AGM 2017

The 58th Annual General Meeting of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club will take place on Monday 31 July 2017 at 18h00 at the ABYC.

A copy of the financial statements, minutes of the previous AGM, Commodore and Treasurers Reports will be available from the office.

ABYC Prizegiving 2017

The 2017 ABYC Prizegiving takes place on Saturday 8 July from 18h30 until late.

Put your club tie and jacket on, round up your crew and book your tickets with Anna- Mari or at the bar. R120.00 per adult and R80.00 for Under 13’s.
