Bart’s Bash/Centenary Cup Races Results – Sunday 17th September

21 September 2016

With sunnier weather than the previous day, yachts Malgas, Sea-Esta, Jelly-Baby and Tikalox II sailed an Olympic course in light SE winds.

After some argy-bargy at the start, Malgas, Jelly-Baby and Tikalox II kept a tight pack around the course, with Tikalox II gaining lost ground on the beats when it was able to hoist its spinnaker on the runs.

With just over a minute separating these three contenders, the corrected times were going to be telling. Tikalox II took first from Malgas, who was just 27 seconds ahead of Jelly-Baby. Sea-Esta brought up the rear a few minutes later. Full results below.

Thank you to Harry for taking Lady out as the committee boat and for the crew of Malgas and Sea-Esta for hauling marker-buoys.

2015 Centenary Cup – 24, 26 & 27 September

21 September 2015

This event over the coming long weekend will consist of at least two medium distance races on Thursday 24th (Skippers at 10h30, start at 11am, either Port of Ngqura or Rybanks) and Saturday 26th (Skippers at 10h30, start at 11am either Port of Ngqura or Rybanks), so that handicaps come into fair play. Sunday has round-the cans races planned (Skippers at 9h30, start at 11am) – all weather and shipping movement dependent.

2014 Centenary Cup Results

29 September 2014

The 2014/25 sailing season Centenary Cup was sailed over three days – 24 September (Heritage Day), 27 and 28 September.

Sailing on 27 September was dedicated to the memory of twice around the world ABYC Member, Dieter Wassermann, who tragically passed away at 9:15 am that morning after a massive heart attack on the deck of the club. 76 year old Wassermann sailed twice around the world on his 39 foot Colin Child designed, Pommern. A colourful character who will be sorely missed.

Wednesday poured with rain and was extremely light – as a consequence only three boats; Tikalox II, Makgas and Sewen, set off to sail the Harbour, Nqura starboard mark, Bellbuoy, Harbour finish course which they completed in around 5 hours with Sewen gamely struggling in 5 hours and forty minutes after the gun. Charlie Hills told me that at one stage it took them 30 minutes to cover which must have been 55 metres.

Saturday saw wind conditions only suited to the stronger boats – read: only skippers with paid up insurance elected to brave the conditions – and the L36, Spirit of Sprite sailed a faultless two hour race to emerge ahead of Malgas and Jellbaby.

Sunday saw five boats leave at a earlier than advertised 10:00 am on a course to the Bellbuoy and back to the harbour with less than 6 minutes separating all the finishers. Wild Thing did a sterling job to catch up with the fleet after leaving the harbour a ‘tad’ later than the rest of the fleet. This was the quickest race of the Cup at just over 90 minutes for all the finishers.

In the final standings consistency won the day with Malgas taking top spot as the only boat to have sailed all three races with three second places, second was Rob Smith’s Tikalox II with two firsts and a DNC and third was the Spirit of Sprite with a first, a fourth and one DNC.

2-014 Centenary Cup Sailing Instructions

23 September 2014

The Sailing Committee is heralding the changes in approach with the 2014 Centenary Cup Sailing Instructions.

Hennie Haasbroek and his committee have recognised that many sailors feel uncomfortable with around the cans racing as the Centenary Cup has been in the past so they have introduced a new format – Medium Distance racing/cruising on two days and only one day of round the cans. A format that is surely to find favour with sailors at ABYC.

This season’s Centenary Cup will be sailed on 24, 27 and 28 September 2014. Four races are planned with two being medium distance races and the scheduled time of the warning signal for the first race each day is 11H00. Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 10h00 on the day it will take effect.
