Algoa Bay Yacht Club Dinghy Series results from 5 November 2016

8 November 2016

The weather might have been cool, but the competition was hot amongst the dinghy sailors chasing around the cans on Saturday for Rounds 3, 4 and 5 of our Dinghy Regatta. With Ronnie running bridge from Stampede (thank you Ronnie and Alan), the Open and Junior fleets enjoyed flat water and steady winds all afternoon. It was fun having a number of RYC sailors in the mix, and having Malgas and Wallbanbger bring the VP steel band members out to watch one of the races (thank you Mike and John).

The sailors and families were brilliantly entertained during the post-race bring & braai, by the Victoria Park Steel Band – a well-practiced troupe! A big thank you to all who attended and who helped organise the event; in particular Ronnie, Frank, Wally, Roger and Gordon.

The series continues on Saturday December 3rd

Results – Race of the Cardinals Sunday 30 October

1 November 2016

This was a medium distance race around Bellbuoy and the Port of Ngqura Lateral mark. We had a South West wind, that varied between 8 and 18 knots.

Mike Cullum was quick to get Malgas over the start line, followed by Fling, Tikkalox II and Sea-Esta, with Bateleur making a late start. But Jim Foot caught up and passed both Sea-Esta and Fling before the Ngqura port lateral mark. Tikkalox II and Fling had their bags out for a fun reach down to Ngqura. Then it was an afternoon of tacking back to the Port of Port Elizabeth, weaving between the wind shadows of the anchored ships in the road.

The results speak to good tactics, and how 5 minutes lost to retrieve a hat can cost you 3rd place!

Rank Boat Class Helm TCF Elapsed Corrected
1 Malgas L34 Mike Cullum 0.95 04:04 0:03:52
2 Tikkalox II Miura Rob Smith 0.88 04:47 0:04:13
3 Sea-Esta Muira Jimmy Swinnerton 0.88 05:57 0:05:14
4 Fling Sadler 26 Morgan Griffiths 0.8 06:38 0:05:18
5 Bateleur Dibi15 Jim Foot 0.892 DNF

Nemesis Double-handed Race 2 – Sunday 16 October

18 October 2016

With just two boats on the start line, the course from the harbour was around Bellbuoy and the Safe Water Mark and back to the harbour. Malgas were quick off the start, rounding the breakwater to unfurl their asymmetrical and they were off.

With the South West freshening and the gusts becoming fiercer, their asymmetrical over-powered them causing some serious broaching. Walbanger had a re-think on launching her spinnaker and settled for a near-planing run to the Bell Buoy.

During the beat from the Safe Water Mark the boats experienced wind gusts of up to 40kts, Malgas had already reefed but still experienced regular knock downs.

All in all the boats and their crews enjoyed a very high adrenalin outing. On corrected times, Wallbanger (1h35m) very narrowly beat Malgas (1h37m).
